Place To Wander: Rietveld Schröder House

As walls shift, rooms come to life and vice versa.

By Sanne Bolten

This small one-family house was commissioned by Ms. Truus Schröder-Schräder, designed by architect Thomas Rietveld and built in 1924. The flexibility of its spatial arrangements stands out, and the building has been considered an icon of 'De Stijl' Modern Movement in architecture.

The use of primary colors and geometric shapes underscore its simplicity. The house is unique in many ways. Since its careful restoration, the entire Rietveld Schröderhuis serves a museum.
